Sometimes the desire to help others achieve their best life can take us in directions we may have never dreamed. For Lori Landin, creator of 1st Essentials for Life, her journey started with music and teaching, evolving into a business that focuses on the well-being of all. Whether you call her a health coach, certified essential oils coach, or entrepreneur, Lori Landin is an inspirational story of transformation. Lori took time out of her busy schedule to talk to PositiveVibesMag, giving us a glimpse of her past, current wellness offerings, and her vision for a brighter future for all.
PositiveVibesMag: How did you get to this point in your journey?
I was raised with performing arts and, in high school, I was given the opportunity to represent my state on a National Tour of Europe. It was an amazing trip, but money was an issue for me. Instead of giving up on that dream, my community came in and supported me. I never gave up. I got a master’s in music conducting and spent 16 years as an educator and director of music and theatre in all levels. Towards the last years, I was dealing with a lot of stress with some serious health issues. About that same time I was diagnosed with a very severe health issue that, according to the doctors, is non-curable. They put me on pills, nine-a-day for life, saying I would never get off them and I knew that wasn’t what I wanted.
I started diving into health. I began studying. I got into essential oils and tweaked my diet so that it was more organic and grass fed. Through that journey, I was able to get off all of the medications within about a year. That was over seven years ago. Since then, I haven’t even used Tylenol! I got certified as a health coach through the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN). I have since become a Board Certified Health Coach. I am also a certified Essential Oil Coach. About three years ago, I made the decision to step out of my education career and go full time into my business that I called 1st Essentials for Life. My goal for that title was to bring in all aspects of life; the essential key is to have a healthy life. In May, I partnered with another company so that I could use their products as a tool for my clients. Their hair and skin care is holistic, scientifically-based, natural with proven results. Over the past year or so I’ve been taking my business online. I’m reaching out to the world.
PositiveVibesMag: What do you feel is the strongest component of your business? What do you feel people would benefit from you?
Lori Landin: Well, ultimately it would be the Masterminds (the courses that I am working on). Right now, it’s about my health coaching and weight loss. For example, I have a man who just started my program a week ago. He’s diabetic, overweight and in one week he lost 12 pounds! He feels amazing. His numbers (blood glucose levels) went down to 97. I have other clients that were over 300 pounds. Their diabetic medications were coming off because the program is balancing their blood sugar and keeping the inflammation out. This program that I use is predictable, averaging 10-12 pounds a month in weight loss, but it’s all done safely. I’m excited for Masterminds because I can not only do classes on health and wellness, but also different types like in music.
PositiveVibesMag: With quarantine, there are individuals out there, sitting at home and ordering takeout. It is scary to think that people are succumbing to poor choices, giving up on health.
During this pandemic, people have been complaining about gaining weight. Myself and my clients have been losing weight and feeling happy. We are at peace. Our program is not just about the body, it’s also about the mind. So through all of this, I have been calmer.
It’s been quite amazing during the past few months. Since I’ve taken my businesses online, I’ve been able to keep doing things normally with my work. It has been an amazing gift. So when they say it’s been so terrible because everyone is sitting home, gaining weight…it’s like no, you don’t have to do that–it’s totally a choice. A lot of people don’t know they have the choice to wake up and be happy. This whole mindset shift is needed in society right now and I’m excited to be a part of it.
PositiveVibesMag: For the oils, are you primarily topical or are you intake? What do you usually suggest for your clients?
Lori Landin: All ways–I do it aromatically, topically, and internally. The products I use are completely pure and safe with the highest standard, highest grade there is. I have no hesitation to recommend or use these oils (even internally). I trust the company and their standard. The oils are clearly marked with a food label if they are able to be used internally. Topically, I use them both morning and night. My husband and I also use them in diffusers. We use them in cooking. We use them in water. Our home is filled with them in every room. doTerra is highly tested and has been around for a long time. I’m the kind of person that won’t encourage people to use something I don’t believe in and that’s why I’ve gone out and searched for these partners to bring into my business.
PositiveVibesMag: The fact that you share your story is empowering. I see that you hold many roles–the daughter, mother, grandmother–how do you balance everything?
Lori Landin: That’s what the business is all about–helping people balance their life. I have found since I have gone into this full time, my life has balance. I have freedom of my day and that was never the case when I was a teacher. I was gone before 6 in the morning and with music and theatre, sometimes I wasn’t home until after 11. In this career, I am free with my time. I can schedule time with family. I take the day off and go visit family. Because I do this online, I can travel and still do my work wherever. To be able to wake up everyday and know that I can help somebody in their life, everyday, it is awesome; I can help as many people as I want, everyday.
PositiveVibesMag: If you could give advice to someone who is out there looking to start their business in your model, what would you say to them?
Lori Landin: Do it… absolutely do it. When I was teaching, I pondered if I could make this work and whether I should give up my secure paycheck. I had been there 16 years as a teacher and it was scary. I knew I had to do something because of my aging mother and my health. I have learned that you don’t have to have all the certificates anymore or degrees, but you have to have the learning and the experience and love what you are doing. If you do, it is so worth it. Happiness isn’t just from the money, it’s living life; being able to live life, having time for yourself and your family–to be able to go places and not feel drained all the time. If there is an obstacle, don’t just say, oh. I can’t do it–find a way–that’s what I’ve done to make it happen. Go for the dreams, it’s worth it!
PositiveVibesMag: Is there anything else you would like to say to drive home your message?
Lori Landin: Well, I think to be happy in life, you need to be giving. You need to be serving. If you’re going to go into your career, become an entrepreneur, start your business, or step out of a career, you want to make sure you are doing something you love and it’s serving other people because that is where the happiness comes. When you’re happy, and you’re making other people happy, you’re living life to the fullest. If you’re living to serve people, to help people improve themselves, to improve the world, whatever–being a positive light to the world, you’ll be happy. You’ll find that your life will be less stressful and you’ll feel so much joy, much more success, because you’re giving–serving and giving to others. Taking my businesses online has been phenomenal because I can now reach people I would have never known before and being able to be a light for them, that’s awesome.
